lyrics

i sat under your tree
until its branches near consumed me
until i thought its shade would freeze me solid

i sat under your tree
until its roots began to pierce me
and dead and still, i grew into a fossil

i sat under your tree
until its bark scratched symbols in me
and leaves piled dry and brittle in my lap

i sat under your tree
until you drilled a hole right through me
and fell down to your knees to drink the sap

the fruit has fallen
wasted and rotten
but the soil is fertile
and won't be forgotten

i rotted from your tree
fell unto the earth and grew again
until i stood fully in bloom

i carved into your trunk
ground the wood to pages
and drew plans to build a cold and simple tomb

i cut off all your limbs
stripped off what i could for kindling
and what i didn't burn, i made a casket

i burned all of your books
until the smoke drove all my love away
and all i have left is your ashes

long dark hallways loud with locking doors
save your face and scrub it off your floors
i'd move house if my house moved like yours

(the hallways in this house are long and loud
and dark as death
the doors stay locked
nobody's home to use them anyhow

i've scrubbed my skin to bloody mess
and still i feel the fingertips
but at least the smoke is clear now that the fire's out)

did you
did you feel lied to
when i told you
i would bury you
i swear that i did
