until its branches near consumed me
until i thought its shade would freeze me solid

i sat under your tree
until its roots began to pierce me
and dead and still, i grew into a fossil

i sat under your tree
until its bark scratched symbols in me
and leaves piled dry and brittle in my lap

until you drilled a hole right through me
and fell down to your knees to drink the sap

the fruit has fallen
wasted and rotten
but the soil is fertile
and won't be forgotten

i rotted from your tree
fell unto the earth and grew again
until i stood fully in bloom

i carved into your trunk
ground the wood to pages
and drew plans to build a cold and simple tomb

i cut off all your limbs
stripped off what i could for kindling
and what i didn't burn, i made a casket

i burned all of your books
until the smoke drove all my love away
and all i have left is your ashes
